There are a total of 2 specialist training sectors in the complete CompTIA A+ course, of which you'll need certification in both subjects to gain A+ competency. A+ certification by itself will give you the ability to mend and maintain stand-alone PC's and MAC's; ones which are usually not part of a network - this generally applies to home use and small companies. You may also want to think about supplementing the A+ with Network + as it will give you the knowledge to look after networks of computers, which is where the bigger salaries are.

Proper support is incredibly important - look for a package providing 24x7 full access, as anything less will not satisfy and will also impede your ability to learn. Email support is too slow, and phone support is often to a call-centre which will make some notes and then email an advisor - who'll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, at a time suitable for them. This is all next to useless if you're lost and confused and only have a specific time you can study.

As long as you look hard, you will find professional companies who offer direct-access support around the clock - no matter what time of day it is. Never settle for less than this. 24x7 support is the only kind to make the grade when it comes to computer-based training. Maybe late-evening study is not your thing; but for most of us, we're out at work when traditional support if offered.

How long has it been since you considered your job security? For most people, we only think of this after something goes wrong. However, the reality is that our job security doesn't really exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us. However, a quickly growing market-place, with a constant demand for staff (due to a big shortage of trained staff), enables the possibility of real job security.

Offering the IT sector as an example, the 2006 e-Skills survey highlighted a skills deficit around the UK of over 26 percent. To explain it in a different way, this clearly demonstrates that Great Britain is only able to source three properly accredited workers for every four jobs that exist today. Acquiring the appropriate commercial computer exams is correspondingly a fast-track to realise a life-long and enjoyable career. As the Information Technology market is evolving at such a speed, there really isn't any other sector worth taking into account for a new future.

Often, trainers provide mainly work-books and reference manuals. This isn't very interesting and not a very good way of remembering. Years of research and study has time and time again verified that getting into our studies physically, is far more likely to produce long-lasting memories.

Programs are now found in disc format, where everything is taught on your PC. Utilising the latest video technology, you are able to see your instructors showing you how something is done, and then practice yourself - in a virtual lab environment. All companies should willingly take you through some samples of their training materials. You're looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and many interactive sections.

Many companies provide training that is purely available online; and while this is acceptable much of the time, consider what happens if internet access is lost or you get slow speeds and down-time etc. It's preferable to have DVD or CD discs that removes the issue entirely.

An area that's often missed by trainees thinking about a course is the concept of 'training segmentation'. Basically, this means how the program is broken down into parts for drop-shipping to you, which can make a dramatic difference to the point you end up at. By and large, you will join a program taking 1-3 years and receive a module at a time. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this: What if there are reasons why you can't finish all the sections or exams? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Without any fault on your part, you may go a little slower and not get all the study materials as a result.

For maximum flexibility and safety, most students now choose to have all their training materials (which they've now paid for) sent immediately, and not in a piecemeal fashion. It's then up to you how fast or slow and in what order you'd like to take your exams.
