Welcome to Friday nights, 'Fringe.' In an obvious nod to another science fiction show that notoriously struggled and was ultimately canceled, tonight's episode had 'Firefly in its title.

I hope audiences will find it here, or Fox will find some much-needed patience, as things are really starting to get good in this third season.

When he stole the truck, we were left wondering, but when we discovered the robbery victim was in the police cruiser ahead of Peter and Olivia, we knew. Not only would it put Walter in that pivotal decision moment, but it was a poetic link to how Roscoe Joyce lost his son.

Christopher Lloyd was cleverly cast as a former rock star who's son came 25 years into the future to see him. He also turned in a brilliant performance as a rocker version of Walter. Both men had lost their passion and careers, as well as their sons.

While that burden of responsibility does not necessarily belong entirely to Walter, he shoulders it as he does everything bad that has happened in the series.

Granted, Hollywood has a hard time appreciating science fiction as high art. It's as if they get distracted by all the shiny tricks that they completely miss the performances of the people bringing these amazing tales to life.

Walter thinks the Observer did everything he did to save his life; by having Peter drink his "brain juice" serum accidentally.

But then there's a whole second universe that was impacted by Walter's fateful decision to save Peternate and bring him back to this world.

That means not tinkering with the schedule like 'Firefly.' And it also means not trying to extend the show beyond its creators intended shelf life for it, like the network did with 'The X-Files.' Let the story unfold, but please let it finish as well.

It's a shame it's on opposite 'Supernatural,' but at the same time, 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' are further proof that sci-fi and fantasy can still work on Fridays. Will there be any viewers left for 'Fringe'? Time will tell.

If they believe Fox is behind it, they might have more incentive to stick with it as well, or even try it for the first time.
