There are not many more special moments compared to observing a nest full of bird eggs hatch into a brood of cute famished newborn chicks. While this can often be observed in the forest, one method to bring this gift of the wilderness closer to home is to use birdhouse plans to make a bird house for your backyard or patio. From basic designs to detailed beach condos on a string, birdhouses of all types have captivated the hearts of bird watchers and the birds that reside inside them for hundreds of years.

Whenever you construct a bird house out of wood, you will want to build it out of cedar, redwood, or pine. Most people prefer to build them out of cedar as it's a lower priced wood with lots of advantages. Cedar has a natural resistance to wood rot and insects.

Don't use scrap wood or wood that you're unsure of whether or not it's been treated. Some treated wood contains harsh chemicals that may be poisonous or even deadly to wild birds. It's always safer to buy a fresh new piece of wood if you're uncertain of exactly what a piece of wood was previously used for.

You'll want to acquire birdhouse plans that keep the bird's safety in mind. While many designs tend to have perches, these can potentially be a death trap. Perches not only provide the birds with a place to land, but also supply a place for predators to latch onto as they have a peak into the bird nest.

Building a bird house can be a fun experience but it's always important to keep the bird's health and safety at the foremost of your thoughts. One way to do this would be to ensure of the appropriate selection of wood and a sturdy construction, along with the location of the bird house, to help keep it safe and sound from predators. Keeping that in mind, once your bird house is properly constructed, you'll have it to enjoy for many years to come.
