The majority of people are aware of the benefits that mist humidifiers can bring. What is not so well understood is the difference between the different types and how they can benefit you. The situation is made even more complicated by the large number of brands and their different models. Mist humidifiers can help you in a variety of situations; this article is intended to help you make the right decision when you come to make your decision.

You will find three types of humidifier that are available, these are commonly known as cool mist, warm mist and ultrasonic humidifiers. Things already start to get a little confusing however because ultrasonic humidifiers can be of the cool mist or warm mist variety, or some models can produce either at the aid of a button.

Basically the standard warm mist humidifiers operate by heating water to a high temperature and this water is emitted as a vapor that forms a fine mist in the air. This can have many beneficial effects on sinus and other respiratory problems. There are two side effects though. One is that the room tends to get warm and humid so that it is similar to a greenhouse on a humid day. This is fine for many people but others do feel a little uncomfortable. The other thing to be aware of is that the water is heated and the vapor is hot to touch. Therefore great care needs to be taken if it is used in a baby's room. On the other hand, a cool mist humidifier as the name suggests simply generates a fine mist of cool water vapor. This is still very effective at raising the humidity of the room but without the heat. It is often suggested that cool mist is more suitable to the summer months whereas the warm mist variety is more suited to the winter season.

The last type of humidifier is known as the ultrasonic humidifier. It uses a metal diaphragm, which is made to vibrate at a very high ultrasonic frequency in a similar fashion to the way a speaker vibrates. This vibration breaks a stream of water into droplets, which are output in the form of a mist. They have the advantage of being very quiet. Some models have a pre-heat function to produce a warm and safe (body temperature) mist.

The ultimate choice of humidifier often depends on where you live and the general climate. A warm and cool mist ultrasonic humidifier is the better compromise because it generates both types of mist.
