When setting up your custom aquarium you have to follow a few golden rules. It is very simple to ruin your own hard work by trying to take short cuts. For example one of the most common ways of harming your brand-new fish tank is by putting plants which haven't been properly washed.
Taking possession of your very first fish is a fun filled time however, you may cause him problems if you do not take care when moving him from the store to your new tank. You cannot simply dump him into the brand new tank. If moving in a plastic bag, let the bag drift in the tank so that the water temperature inside and out can equalize. A few people will recommend adding some of the fish tank water into the bag so the fish can acclimatize to the new water.
Marine fish are very responsive to light therefore it may be a good idea to subdue the lighting effects when putting them into their new custom aquarium. If you are adding a new fish to a fish tank which is already populated, it is prudent to keep the new fish separate for about two weeks. This gives enough time for symptoms of any illnesses he might be carrying to manifest themselves.
You might be amazed to know that in addition to your custom aquarium you should also buy a small separate fish tank. This will act as your hospital tank as well as being the place to house any new fish for the settling period before putting them to your existing aquarium. These safety measures are there to protect your fish from disease. Understand that your investment in any fish is worthless if they are all dead. Unfortunately given the enclosed home, disease can spread quickly and therefore these precautions are not just essential but should be considered important.
