Everyone who has a web site has heard about search engine optimization, or simply seo. There are also a lot of companies that provide seo services. The continuing struggle to get onto the first page of Google for your selected keywords is their area of expertise. Unfortunately, they are often confounded by clients that do not fully grasp the concept of supply and demand.

What frequently happens, is that often a client will elect to target a keyword that has hardly any demand, and then get upset when their traffic does not increase like they expected. What they seem to take a look at is the supply for that keyword.

Whenever you try a search for a particular term, for example insurance, the number which pops up under the Google search bar is the supply. This means this is the quantity of pages already indexed by Google which mention the word "insurance" somewhere within their text. The web pages in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) are ordered by their perceived significance. That is based on the number of links relating to that particular keyword which lead to that page. The more links there are, the more important the page is considered to be by Google with regard to that particular keyword.

Demand, on the other hand, depends on the number of times a certain keyword or search phrase is entered into Google's search bar. The more often it is searched for, the higher the demand will be and the more visitors you will get should you target that keyword intelligently.

An increased demand often leads to higher competition. The level of competition is challenging to determine. It is dependent on a variety of factors. The very first factor is the number of pages targeting or even just mentioning the keyword, so basically, the supply. The next factor is the average number of links which the top ranking sites have got. These two encompass amount of competition. Another aspect will be the quality of the links. Pages that have more links coming from highly ranked website pages are seen as being more trustworthy than a site with backlinks from pages which have a page rank of 0.

Clients often don't realise this, because they only think in context of their particular interpretation of the phrase. A regular argument is along the lines of, "How can the competition be so high? Only five companies provide that service! " But on the internet, those five companies, along with a few others who are attempting to increase traffic to their sites, have got hundreds or even thousands of pages mentioning that keyword.

So search engine optimization, or seo, isn't as straight forward as it seems initially. You need to choose your keywords carefully and get an accurate analysis of demand, supply and also competition before you can decide on a technique to target the keywords you would like to appear on page one of Google for.
