Mattress recycling is an issue that needs to be thought about, as more and more people just fly tip and leave their household waste lying around and littering the countryside and streets of Britain. It is understandable that large items are harder to dispose of, so it should not be something that you think is just a waste of time for you, as many people have the problem and know how to effectively deal with it and do the best possible thing that you can do.
In order to recycle your mattress, you can look up local facilities in your area. You may be able to hire a van that you can use to take your mattress there if it will not fit in your regular method of transportation, or some plants will be able to pick up your mattress themselves.
An innovative new scheme debuted in Lewisham sees this trouble not having to be gone to by people anymore though, as a mattress recycling service is readily available to people. Similar to black bin emptying and your regular recycling, it will basically be a kerb side service that will get rid of your now unwanted item. Lewisham are one of the first local councils to put this in place.
It works by getting a special sticker from any local library in Lewisham, and then leaving your mattress out on your usual collection day. As long as the sticker is visible on the item, then it will be taken away and recycled. Up to 93 percent of a mattress can be used again, so it is very worthwhile making sure that a scheme such as this gets your mattress, instead of it going to a rubbish tip.
This way of disposing of your mattress will also save you the hassle of having to dump it somewhere away from your house.
If you buy a new mattress, which is likely if you are looking to get rid of one, then the company you buy from will usually be able to take away your old one too. This may cost a small fee, but it is worth it if it means that you do not have to take care of its disposal yourself. Obviously in areas where the council has already introduced the mattress recycling scheme, this will not need to be done, but for all others then it is worth it.
Over 6000 mattresses were left on the streets of Lewisham between August 2009 and January 2010, just half a year, so it is easy to see why the scheme is in place there. With demand though, it may spread across the United Kingdom and mean that the country can generally be a cleaner, and more environmentally friendly, place. Get in touch with your local council to see if there is mattress recycling in your area, and make sure that you take advantage of it if it is available: it can do a lot of good and you will be surprised just how much can be done with that worn out thing you used to sleep on.
