The attractions of living and working in Spain are many. The people, the culture, the weather and the outdoors lifestyle are all massive draws. It's no surprise that millions of holiday makers flock to Spain every year to sample the warmth of the Spanish sun and hospitality. It's no surprise too that large numbers of English teachers choose to teach English in Spain. TEFL in Spain is big business.
If you want a change of scenery, to see a bit of the world, to apply your skills to some fresh challenges and to develop a new career and broaden your horizons, what better place to start than Spain?
The passion and enthusiasm of the people is matched only by the beauty and diversity of the country they are so fortunate to live in. A brilliantly located, culturally rich and magnificently attractive region, Spain offers the prefect environment for both living and teaching.
Don't be fooled into thinking that teaching in Spain is just a glorified holiday, though. Any teacher committed to their job and to making sure that their students make as much progress as possible will tell you that teaching can be an extremely demanding vocation. It's not all hard work, though. The likelihood is that you will also make numerous good friends, experience lots of new and interesting people and places and have great fun along the way. Teaching is an incredibly sociable job - especially in a country as sociable as Spain!
It's essential to make sure that you prepare yourself properly by acquiring the necessary qualifications. Many teaching jobs in Spain require proof of ability as a prerequisite of taking up a teaching position. Qualifications also offer you better working conditions and earning potential. But most importantly, being properly taught and qualified equips you with the skills and the confidence to do your job well. Just because you are a native speaker of a language doesn't mean that you can necessarily teach it well.
Teaching is a skill that needs to be learnt and practised. There are many aspects to language learning that you will encounter when teaching that maybe you aren't so clued up on - aspects of grammar, teaching techniques and methods that you can only really apply if you have studied and qualified as a TEFL teacher yourself.
There are numerous TEFL and ESL training options available including online courses, residential courses and courses run abroad. Take a good look and see what suits you.
Your training will likely guide you towards the type of teaching that you prefer and Spain offers a whole range of teaching options from kindergarten and younger children through to language camp type teaching, young adults, adult and business English.
It's simply a case of deciding what your preferred type of teaching is and focusing in on that. Be flexible when it comes to locations within Spain. If you aren't insistent on having to live in one of the big cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, in the mountains or on the coast then hard work and application should mean that you can land exactly the sort of position you want. The advice is always to do as much research as possible on both the company you are applying to and the place where you will be working. There are plenty of online forums and chat rooms that can help you gather the information you need.
Viva España!
