The NHL or National Hockey League is the premier professional hockey league in the United States and Canada. The NHL currently is made up of of 30 teams of which 24 are based in the United States. In many regards the NHL is not just the premier hockey league in North America it is also the best professional hockey league throughout the world.
As is expected the NHL follows pretty standard hockey guidelines. Other than Olympic hockey games there are usually no other big hockey games that use a different rule set. The NHL even uses a slightly different sized ice rink than Olympic tournaments; though some players say the difference really doesn't have much of an impact on the game. Traditional NHL matches are based on the number of goals made in three periods; as is expected the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of standard time.
The NHL is pretty much like most other professional leagues in the way they pick a championship team. The NHL season consists of a playoff system every year which is used to pick the final champion. In the United States the NHL is considered to be one of the 4 top sports along with the NFL, MLB and NBA; in Canada however the NHL is by far the most watched sports league.
Regardless of country differences the NHL has recently been fighting to draw the fans many advertisers hope for. The NHL's fan base has been declining in many places; causing a massive advertising and fan campaign in the past couple of years. The NHL has been successful in building some sort of a viewer base in many areas; though many teams and venues still struggle. Overall the NHL is an unique and exciting league which does well regardless of the amount of viewers.
