New research has revealed that midsize enterprises across the globe are taking up telepresence and unified communications (UC) services. The study by research company TheInfoPro revealed that 77 per cent of midsize enterprises and the Fortune 1000 feel that telepresence solutions are meeting their requirements, while 66 per cent intend to expand their capabilities in the field.

In addition, it found that 25 per cent of enterprises are planning to boost their use of UC over the next 12 months. Bill Trussell, managing director of networking research at TheInfoPro, said the technology offers firms both cost efficiency and effectiveness. He added: "For companies that have been forced to either eliminate or reduce travel budgets due to the downturn and rising fuel prices, telepresence and UC have offered solutions that are both highly productive and low-cost to the network budget." Robert Pose, editor-in-chief at news website VoIP Evolution, recently claimed that UC services such as VoIP are becoming mainstream.

Unified communications are 'ideal for future growth'. Businesses could support their plans for future growth by implementing a unified communications strategy based around VoIP phones, it has been claimed. According to MyBroadband.co.za, the infrastructure may not be ideal for an office-bound two-man team, but it could offer major benefits to firms looking to introduce new branches or hire salespeople to travel across the country. The website added that a key issue for companies to consider is training, as people will need to be fully aware of the benefits of the technology. "If your initial use of the solution will be limited to basic telephony, you can train as you go. Otherwise, train before cutover," it advised. "The same goes if you plan to maintain the solution in-house."
