One of Chile’s most famous regions for trekking is the Lake District, which is located around 900km south of Santiago. You may visit there a few of the country’s national parks. The Lago Verde Trail in the Parque Nacional Huerquehue leads through beech forests, past waterfalls and offers good views of the Volcán Villarica. The Parque Nacional Queulat is usually characterized by glaciers, fjords and volcanic peaks. It is a well-known destination for adventure travelers. Guided hikes, ecology tours and boat trips are offered at Parque Nacional Conguillio. The Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, which lies around 400km northwest of Punta Arenas, provides abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery consisting of large glaciers, fjords, waterfalls and blue lakes dotted with icebergs. The park features a well-developed network of trails complemented by trekking huts. For your accommodation you can use the Chile hotels located in all major cities following your route.

If you want to follow his footsteps the Juan Fernández Islands are your destination. The islands contain lots of indigenous plants and animals, most notably the Juan Fernández fur seal as well as the Juan Fernández hummingbird. They can be an excellent reason for you to stay a couple of days in proper hotel in Chile and explore all this remarkable wildlife. The Parque Nacional Lauca is filled with flamingos, rheas and llamas. Guanacos (or llama guanicoe) roam freely in the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, that is also a fantastic place to observe giant condors. Magellanic penguins can be seen at Chiloé Island, a place of evergreen forests and fjords much admired by Darwin. The abundant coastal wildlife of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego involves large colonies of sea elephants, sea lions and penguins.
